· To gode julekalendere

The way statistics are used in journalism is in most cases inadequate, write Stephen Cushion, Justin Lewis, and Robert Callaghan, all of Cardiff University. The authors analysed nearly seven thousands UK news stories on television, radio, and the internet.

Over one-fifth (22 per cent) of the analysed news made reference to statistics. In some subject areas the use of statistics was the norm: for example, 75 per cent of economic news used statistics. Other statistics-heavy subjects are energy (58.5 per cent), social policy (54.1), business (49.7), and taxation (47.9).

· The Economist vil udgive ‘longform’ på Medium

For the next couple of months we’ll be sharing some of our best longform or multimedia journalism, and some behind-the-scenes glimpses into the process of how our correspondents work. It’s a very different kind of journalism from the rapid-response news analyses we published in the run-up to America’s recent election. Some of this work will be produced exclusively for Medium, meaning you won’t even be able to find it on economist.com or in print.

Negative coverage was the order of the day in the general election. Not a week passed where the nominees’ coverage reached into positive territory. It peaked at 81 percent negative in mid-October, but there was not a single week where it dropped below 64 percent negative.

Facebook is working on a new feature that will showcase lists of curated content from publishers directly in the News Feed, according to two people familiar with the project and internal documentation seen by Business Insider.

The fake news problem we’re facing isn’t just about articles gaining traffic from Facebook timelines or Google search results. It’s also an issue of news literacy — a reader’s ability to discern credible news. And it’s getting harder to tell on sight alone which sites are trustworthy. On a Facebook timeline or Google search feed, every story comes prepackaged in the same skin, whether it’s a months-long investigation from The Washington Post or completely fabricated clickbait.

· Kunstig intelligens (AI) er faret vild

A conscious mind will never be built out of software, argues a Yale University professor.

[…] I believe it is hugely unlikely, though not impossible, that a conscious mind will ever be built out of software. Even if it could be, the result (I will argue) would be fairly useless in itself. But an unconscious simulated intelligence certainly could be built out of software–and might be useful. Unfortunately, AI, cognitive science, and philosophy of mind are nowhere near knowing how to build one. They are missing the most important fact about thought

· Nyt medie: The Outline

I’m not going to bore you with every tiny detail, but by now it should be rather clear that something is broken in the way the media functions and in what is expected of a media organization. This is not entirely the fault of the news industry, but it’s not not the industry’s fault. The math of this miscalculation is clear: For far too long the media industrial complex has relied on the crutch of scale and quantity, regurgitative storytelling practices, the strength of other people’s technology and ideas, and a skewed view of its own position in the world. And that has been detrimental to the audience and the business alike.

Our foundational reason for building The Outline is that we’re really excited about putting something into the world that wasn’t there before. We’re focused on three topics that are increasingly converging in strange and important ways: power (who has it, who wants it, and what do they do when they get it?), culture (the way we live and communicate), and the future (where we’re going next).

We’d assumed that there was a clear need for the external link icon, but in 4 years we’ve seen no evidence that backs this up, so we’re going to stop using it.
